Motor Vehicle Metal Mechanic

Skookum is seeking a results driven and adaptable Motor Vehicle Metal Mechanic. The Motor Vehicle Metal Mechanic performs a variety of welding and fabrication functions.
Typical duties include but are not limited to:

  • Repairs light to heavily damaged bodies and body parts of automotive vehicles according to repair manuals

  • Using hand tools and power tools, removes upholstery, accessories, electrical and hydraulic window, seat-operating equipment, and trim to gain access to vehicle body and fender

  • Removes damaged fenders, panels, and grills, using wrenches and cutting torch, and bolts or welds replacement, straightens bent frames, using hydraulic jack and pulling device, files, grinds, and sands repaired surfaces, using power tools and hand tools.

  • Refinishes repaired surface, using paint spray gun and sander, aims headlights, aligns wheels, bleeds hydraulic brake system, and may paint surface after performing body repairs.

  • Works with various metals, plastics, electric, and mechanical parts

  • Fabrication of specialized parts.

  • Must be able to perform checks on brakes, suspension, wheels, hubs and steering systems.

  • Must be able to read, understand, and follow technical manuals.

  • Maintains required work, time, material, and equipment maintenance records to update equipment service workbook and daily task sheets.

  • Uses operator hoists, wrenches, gauges, cutting torches, grinding wheels, and other general or specialized machines, gauges and tools.

  • Performs work requiring the reading of prints, electrical diagrams, and maintenance instructions applicable to the craft.

  • Performs duties under the direction of the management team.

  • Maintains accurate records required during performance of job duties.

  • Adheres to Safety, Fire, and Security Regulations.

  • Ensures that all parts used are properly charged and that exchanged items are turned in to the storeroom or properly disposed of.

  • Responsible for safe operations and proper care of materials, tools and equipment, and the maintenance of good housekeeping in the Vehicle Maintenance Facility.


  • Minimum 3 years' experience in Automotive welding industry. The ideal candidate should have experience of several of the following areas: welding, fabrication, collision repair.

  • Welding training program certification preferred.

  • American Welding Society certification preferred.

  • Must be knowledgeable with all types of automotive repairs/maintenance.

  • Must be knowledgeable in all areas of shop operations, shop safety, and HAZMAT regulations.

  • Must demonstrate organizational and leadership skills.

  • Must provide general mechanic toolbox. See attached tool list for minimum requirement.

Physical Demands:

  • Must have ability to work effectively under pressure and maintain stamina to perform assigned duties.

  • Will be required to use repetitive motion, reach, lift, kneel, walk, and stand for several hours at a time.

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Must be able to push and pull up to 50 lbs.

  • Must be able to work independently at a fast pace. Must be able to work up to a 40 hour work week.


  • Must be able to pass Medium Risk Public Trust background investigation prior to start.

  • Valid Driver's License is required. Must be able to obtain and maintain coverage by Skookum's insurance carrier.

This position is contingent upon contract award and funding. Position anticipated to begin November 1, 2018.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
